Getting Started in Writing Part Three: Displaying your Work

Now that you know what you want to write and you know what you need to do, let’s talk about displaying our work.
A lot of writers are not comfortable with displaying their work. They are not comfortable with joining social networks and allowing people to read their work. This can only go on or a while because if you plan to go far with your writing and you’re too shy right now to display it, you’re going to have problems down the road.
At some point you are going to have to allow people to critique your work. You won’t know if you’re doing a good job or not if no one tells you. You can always start slow. Have a friend or family member read it. Do this a couple of times. After a while, you will get comfortable with displaying your work.
Now that you have come to the end of the articles, you need to ask yourself, how far do you want to go with your writing? Publish it, make a scrapbook, make cards to give to family members? It’s up to you. Some people write just to let off some steam and never think twice about publishing. Others have dreams of being a published author.
It doesn’t matter what you do because now you’ve mastered the art of writing and the options are endless if you decide to make it public!

Last laugh, Last Cry: Recommended book for October

Last Laugh, Last Cry opens in the middle of a battle scene. Raquel’s ex –common law husband and son’s father is dragged from the bed and beaten within an inch of his life. The reader cannot fully appreciate the motive behind the action; the only clue provided is, "I mean this bastard used to beat on me because he was the one cheating on me!" Through out their relationship he had cheated on her and at 40 years old, and a host of other "transitions" she had succumb to within her life, she decides to "pay back" the one who caused all of the pain she had endured.

Dominique's Thoughts and Recommendation:
I thought this book was outstanding!!!!!! Kudos to the author Xanthe. She did her thing. Raquel, the main character, goes through her fair share of ups and downs. Not to mention, she has a son to look after. This books represents all the single mother's that just want to be loved, be happy and keep a roof over their child's head. Every woman has her fair share of heartaches and we see exactly how Raquel experiences hers. This book will keep you on your toes wondering, what next. It's not like all the other gritty hardcore books. This books will hit home for so many women, not to mention it has a surprising ending. So go out and support this author!!!!!!

"Hot Ice Cont."

When she got to her apartment she made some tea along with Scottish biscuits. Kirsten told Francis that she needs to take a shower due to being on a schedule so he waited for her. Kirsten got her Victoria Secret Lingerie then walks into her bathroom, turns on the water, and takes off her clothes and the doorbell rings "I'll get it!" Kirsten said as she ran to her closet and threw on her housecoat. Looking through the lookout Francis asks "Who is it?" "The pizza man but I did not order any pizza!" When she opens the door the pizza man asked are you Makalya Jones?" She said "No, I'm Kirsten." As she shut the door his foot had stop it. "What are you doing? You have the wrong number." she said. He drop the pizza and took out a gun and pistol slap her "I know!" he said with an evil smirk. Francis got up off the chair and ran to her "What are you doing?" he said. "My job!" the guy said. "This was not part of the deal you weren't suppose to hurt her!"....

A bruise showed slightly on her right cheek. Jason demanded him to tie her up and put her in the back seat so he did what Jason, Jason met Francis in the truck and Kirsten was in the back seat knocked out. Driving to the boss's place Francis told Jason to pull over to Wendy's since he was hungry. Jason was about to go through the drive through but instead parked to go inside. "What are we going to do with the girl?" asked Francis. "Wake her up, untie the rope and get her something to eat." Jason said.

Francis did what he said and she finally woke up. "Leave me alone take your hands off of me!" Kirsten said hysterically. "Shut up now!" he said. She became quiet. "I'm not going to hurt you so get into the passenger seat and I will explain everything on the way." he said. Kirsten already hopped into the front and Francis zoomed around and drove off. Kirsten looked at him in disbelief. "How could you do this to me!" she yelled.

"Kirsten listen to me, alright it was a setup from the beginning even before I met you. This boss chose two people to take captive off, you and me. The deal is to make us lend them $500,000 each by Saturday Night which is Earth Day. They know all about us personal and mental which means they know we participate at the Earth Day Festival with our family. If we do not give them the money by 10:00am our families die. When I met you everything had change and now that is why we have to escape." Francis said. "Hold on a minute, not only are we in danger but our family is just for our money?" she said. "Take it easy we just need to contact the police." Francis said. "No, the boss usually has friends working as cops. If we go to them they would contact that boss and tell them we are on the run. " she said. "What can we do? I don't want to give away my money to them and I don't want my family to die." Kirsten said. "Me either!"

Entering Flagstaff, Arizona, they looked into each other's eyes and tears fell from them. They knew what each other was thinking. "I have not spent such a beautiful informing night with any woman such as you. I'm always busy working!" he said. "It is ok I know what you mean but it pays off in the end but I guess not tonight." she said. Francis held Kirsten's hand and leaned over to kiss her on the lips. As he held her hand he took the steering wheel and drive right off US Hwy 100. Apparently some people driving behind them contacted the police and told them what happen. On the road was left a will along with a letter from Francis and Kirsten with boss's address and the criminals were put in jail. Their families were safe but they were lost forever.

Getting Started in Writing Part Two: Getting Experience in Writing

As I said in the introduction to these articles, a little experience is needed. We may know how to write simple things but being a writer is completely different. One thing I can honestly say is that a writer does not need a degree. I do not have a degree in Journalism. When I went to college, it was for something completely different. Some people in mid life decide to become writers. Some people in their thirties decide to do a career change and become a novelist. You do not need a degree to be a writer but you do need to know what you’re doing or people will not read your work.
Now if you are deciding to be a professional business writer, then you will need a degree. Most companies are looking for people that have the experience as well as the educational background to do the job. So before you start running full force into writing, make sure you know the ins and outs of the particular profession.
One suggestion for getting experience is to take online courses. You can find free online courses everywhere and From A Writer’s POV offers Free Online Courses every couple of months here: http://www.povonlinecourses.webs.com/ Our courses are free.
You can also check at your local library or community bulletin board to see who is offering writing courses. If you have a friend that has experience as a writer, ask them to give you a few pointers.
If you are looking to get a degree for your particular business, look up community colleges that offer the course you’re looking for. Community Colleges are only two years and you will be done in no time.

Getting Started in Writing Part One: Determine your Angle of Writing

As a writer, there are plenty of things you can do, poetry, freelance, novel writing, short story writing, etc. Writing has a lot of different angles. It’s all about what you know and what feels right for you.
Before you get into writing, you need to determine what you want to write. One person may like being a professional business writer. That person would write professionally for a company. Their duties may include, writing web content, writing the companies newsletter, writing reports etc. If this is something that interest you, your angle of writing would be business writing. Someone else may like short story writing. It all comes down to what you like and what feels right to you.
I am a writer. I enjoy writing poetry and novels. I also enjoy inspirational writings, articles and essays. This is my angle of writing. I do not have any interest in business writing. So I would not pursue a career in writing professionally for a company. So before you move any further, you need to decide what type of writing you will go into.
There are plenty of resources to help you find the type of writing you are interested in getting into. My favorite resource besides the internet is the library. It’s free! I love books. I love getting boos and reading them no matter what they are about. So go to your local library and look up books on writing; the different types of writing.
You can also use the internet if you like. You can Google writing or different types of writing. See what interests you.
Determining your angle of writing is very important. You don’t want to get into something that later bores you. You also don’t want to get into a writing that someone else is doing because they love it. You have to do what you love and will fulfill your need and desire to write!

Getting Started in Writing Intro: What being a writer means

The talent to write comes from a desire and a need to express oneself. Most writers write to get a point across, write to entertain others; write to show their creative side. There are many reasons why a person writes. But not all people can write. I mean we are good at writing a grocery list, signing a birthday card but are we good at making a story flow? Writing a nice poem? If you are getting started in writing, these articles will help you get to where you need to be as a writer.
Getting started in writing means, do you have the creativity to make words come together better than someone that doesn’t write. Can you look at something and immediately form a story or thought about it and can immediately put it into writing? These articles will help you sort out what type of writer you want to be. They will give you direction on writing and the different ways a writer can go. I will give you other resources to help you with your writing skills.
One thing a write must always have is a pen and notebook. No writer walks around without it. This is because our minds are always going. You can’t simply turn a writer’s mind off. So as soon as a thought comes to mind, we take out our notebooks and write it down. We are always consumed with great ideas.
I know for me, anytime I am doing something or reading something, my mind wonders to other things and next you know you I have an idea for another book or a business idea that would be excellent. It’s a writer’s mind! So before we go into part one of these articles, make sure you have your pen and notebook ready!

The Writer's Lounge

Kirsten worked as the co-manager at the hottest job in Las Vegas called Pure which is an expensive club. It is late and the party is banging when Kirsten arrives in her Jaguar she steps out with a sophiscated dress on from Versace her keys fall from her hand onto the ground. Kirsten bends down and a hand tocuhes hers which send chills down her back and the guy has Kirsten's keys in his hand when they stand both up they glazw into each other's eyes. "Miss here is your keys." he said. "Thanks so much and sir what is your name?" Kirsten asked. " Francis!" he said "Kirsten!" she said." Can I buy you a drink?" Francis asked. "That would be great!"she said. Both of them walked inside together and proceeded over to the bar. The bartender Jason said hello to Kirsten and she replied with "Hi Jason." Francis asked the bartender did they know each other. "Kirsten is the co-manager of this club everyone knows about Kirsten. "What will you be having?" Jason asked Francis. "A Bacardi Mojito and for you my lady, the usual, a Pina Colada with a cherry on top!" Kirsten said. "Ok, well let's shake and drink!" Jason said. Jason sat their drinks down and they drink them down.

The DJ was playing the song "2 Man Show." Francis got up and asked Kirsten if she wanted to dance. Kirsten laid out her hand which was smooth like a babies bottom he held her hand softly. The two of them danced away all night unti; the club close at two o' clock. When it was time they went outside to Kirsten's car and he told her that he is the CEO/Founder of Science and Math Futuristic, Italain born of the famous car designer Cosimo. Very interested in him they talked so long she invited him over to her palce.

Guest Speaker Sheila E. Lipsey; Editing & Writing

Today we have a guest speaker. Sheila E Lispey. She will be speaking to us about editing and writing. Read her interview below.

Dominique Watson (DW): Do you believe it's important for writer's to have some experience in editing?
Sheila Lipsey (SL): I do believe that it is important, and necessary, for writers to have a level of experience in editing. Placing words on paper does not constitute being a writer. A gifted, talented writer uses editing as an essential tool to weave a story that will captivate an agent, publisher, and reader.
DW: How does writing and editing go hand in hand for a writer?
SL: Writing and editing go hand in hand for a writer because the best plot, the most beautiful book cover, the most professional looking format, does not mean the book is going to be a great book. The well known saying, “don’t judge a book by its cover,” is true. A good book fits inside the cover of the book. It provides sustenance that can determine how much effort the writer has dedicated to make sure the manuscript is the best. Editing for a writer is as necessary as water is for human beings and basically all living creatures. Poor editing can destroy an author’s career, and readers will put the book down, never returning to it.
DW: When writers have to edit their own book, what is your advice on this? Any particular steps?
SL: When writer’s have to edit their own book, I advise them to read books by other successful authors who write in the same genre as the writer. It is necessary to know what editing involves. It is more than checking for punctuation, spelling and capitalization. Editing involves checking for content, layout, structure, character development, plot development, sentence structure and the flow of each word, sentence and paragraph. The particular steps I use when it comes to editing are basically simple. Editing is what pulls my stories together so that they deliver what I expect the story to deliver. I write my manuscript first instead of stopping to edit page after page or chapter after chapter. When my manuscript is completed, I rest for several days to allow the manuscript to saturate. I return to the manuscript for the editing process with a clearer mindset. In addition I maintain a library of books that offer some of the best editing information for writers (and editors).
DW: What is one mistake that writers make when editing?
SL: One mistake that writers make when editing is that many believe editing is overrated, when in actuality it is the most important step writers should take.
DW: Should writers hire editors? Why or why not?
SL: Writers should always have a professional editor to edit their manuscript. Writers can easily overlook mistakes with content, punctuation, structure, etc. because they know their story. Knowing the story means that the writer can easily lose sight of what is necessary to make their story ‘pop’. I believe editing is a service that is worth paying for, if you can locate a professional editor who truly knows the craft..
Editing is an essential tool for writers. Poor editing can ruin an established writer’s work; the lack of a good editing job can just as easily bring a halt to an aspiring writer’s work. Writers, especially published writers who have become authors, must invest in a good editor. They should know what type of editing the manuscript needs. There are many types of editors: copyeditors, acquisition editors, editorial consultants, content editors and proofreaders. It is a blessing when you find an editor who can do it all. Other times, it might be necessary to utilize the services of several editors. If editing is not taken seriously, poor editing or the lack thereof can land a manuscript in a pile that sits close by the paper shredder. Poor editing can send avid readers into a tizzy. Poor editing can be the determining factor that separates the wheat from the tare. Great editing of a manuscript can paint a picture so vivid, so clear and so satisfying that readers often become engaged in the book, essay, or whatever it is the writer addresses. Great editing makes the story easy to read and allows the story to flow. Editing is a must. It is not a choice. Publishers and agents want a well polished, edited manuscript. They will have editors to go over your manuscript again, and that’s fine. It goes to show the importance of editing. I have worked with aspiring and established authors. Some of them can turn out manuscript after manuscript within a short span of time. This is great, but it is disastrous if they have failed to edit their work properly. Another step I put to use is to have a draft reader, someone who reads the finished draft after the writer has completed the final round of self editing. A draft reader can point out grammatical errors, consistency and flow of the manuscript, if the reader is a good draft reader that is. Remember, editing should never be taken for granted. Don’t make it the responsibility of an editor on staff or a paid editor. It doesn’t matter if you pay an editor or if your publisher has staff editors, it is the writer’s responsibility to deliver the best of the best when they turn over their manuscript to these professionals.

SL: I appreciate this opportunity. I am always humbled when others want to read what I write and hear what I have to say. It is a gift from God and another way He shows me that His favor is pouring all over my life.


I believe that editing is very important. How you get your work edited is a different story. This interview with Sheila was very helpful. As writer's we always need to know the background of editing and how important it is in our work.

Hiring a writer to write your book

If you notice, a lot of authors have a writer write their book for them. You find a lot of celebrities doing this; they tell their stories why the writer writes the book. Most celebrities don't have the time to sit and write a book but they want to tell their story so they hire a writer.
Hiring a writer is not bad at all. In my opinion it saves a lot of time but you do lose putting your personal touch on the book. If you are not a writer but you want to write a book, hiring a writer to write your book is the best way to go. I will inform you, this could get a little expensive. Freelance writer's are not cheap! So be cautious when taking this route. You will need to consider the amount of money it will take to hire this person and have them complete the job.

How to get started in writing

So many people are getting into writing books. Some people have stories to tell about their lives like a memoir, others simple want to write a novel. So when getting started with writing books the first question a person asks is "How do I get started in writing"
First ask yourself, have you ever had any experience in writing? If not, you need to take some writing classes. There are plenty of free online writing classes or you can look in your community for them.

If you do have experience in writing then the next step is to decide what type of book you want to write. Not all writers can write in any genre. My genre is inspirational; christian fiction. I can not write a mystery/suspense novel or a romance novel. That's not my genre. So you have to decide what genre you can write and go from there.
Once you've decided on the genre you need to decide what the book will be about. Build a storyline, get some characters. Then you are on the right path to getting started in writing book.

Joining Book Clubs

One thing authors have in common with each other is that they like to read. I don't know too many authors that do not like to read books. Some don't always write in the genre they read but reading in general is a hobby to them and they enjoy it very much.
Besides building your own characters, step into another authors shoes and get into their books and characters. Book clubs are very popular now a days and all sorts of readers are joining book clubs; even authors.
Get involved in local book clubs. This will not only help you with socializing but also help you promote your book. You can speak to the members about your book and what it's about, where to find it and read more about it. What better place to advertise your book than a book club.
I suggest looking for local book clubs and market your book.

The Writer's Lounge

"How could this be happening to me"
There Anna stood in the doorway looking as lovely as ever with a big smile of joy beaming upon her face! Not only was she beautiful but she was talented and intelligent as well. It had been one of Anna's fondest memories when she was younger she recalled of wanting to have a family of her very own and know it was all about to come true!

A year ago she settled down and married the man of her dreams! They had an extravagant and amazing wedding and spent their honeymoon in Paris. She recently just finished law school and know that she was expecting twins thought that all her dreams would soon finally be complete. Her husband was finishing up the nursery! He took another look at it then said, "Honey, What do you think?" She walked over to him and looks him in his eyes and with anticipation and such delight said "Baby its perfect!!

One week later she received a phone call to interview with one of the most prestigious law firms in their city! They asked her if she could come in the same day and though the weather was bad and she knew her husband would have wanted her to wait she did not want to miss out on the opportunity so she did not dare say no!!

She took her shower, threw on one of her sharpest suits and then grabbed her portfolio and cell phone as she anxiously heads out the door. When she arrived the two top firm layers were waiting to greet her. They were so pleased with her expertise and the way the interview went she was hired right on the spot! She gets into the car and excited to tell Tom about the news dials him immediately that she fails to notice the stop sign and a semi truck that was already proceeding in the intersection came smashing dead into her little corvette!!

The Ambulance rushes her to the hospital and Tom dashes to be by her side!

For four days Anna lays in a comma helpless and limb! When she starts coming around she begins to ask questions like, "Where am I, what happened and how are the baies doing?" She erratically begins screaming at the nurse and the doctor has to come in and sedate her! No one wants to be the first to inform her of the bad news. Not only was she permanently paralyzed but the twins did not survive!! She lays there hopeless and silently still thinking, "How could this be happening to me?" And it was then at that very moment she realized her life had drastically changed forever!!

Dominique Watson (DW): Thank you so much for doing the interview. Explain to our readers why you believe having a PR is important to a writer and/or business owner.
Marcia Mcnair (MM): It's the primary way you get the word out about your product and/or service. I'm including word of mouth as an important price of your PR campaign.
DW: As a writer, have you ever hired a PR or Marketer to help promote your book?
MM: Yes, I did, but I was very dissatisfied with the service.
DW: What is the price range for this service?
MM: The price for this service could have cost me close to one thousand dollars, but I decided to test out the service first by contracting for a cheaper package initially. Once I realized the marketer couldn't deliver on the cheaper product, I knew not to trust him with any big money. I recommend that people get references and try out my test method before entrusting anyone with a large sum of money.
DW: What are the chances of writers or business owners succeeding without the proper push of a PR?
MM:You can succeed by doing your own PR, which I did, and I got my book into Barnes and Noble as a result. However, it took me two full years of time consuming work. I am still pretty much functioning as my own PR which means I am constantly on the Internet, writing letters, doing book signings, and networking.
DW: How would an author or business owner go about getting a PR to work for them?
MM: I think you should first check out references, like I said in my answer above. Also, it's very easy to do your own research on a person or company. Don't just call their referrals: Of course, they will only give you the good ones!

An underutilized aspect of marketing your book is marketing your writing in general. Write for local and national newspapers and magazines. Remember, your byline notes your publishing credits and is free advertising for your book! You not only get paid for your article, but get that little perk!
